Can variety help you build muscle?

In this no nonsense muscle building review then one of the key elements the author says will help you put on muscle is to use variety in your exercises.  This is so your body does not get a chance to adapt to the exercises that you are doing. Your body has a great capacity to adapt, and if you keep doing the same exercises then you will slowly start to put on less and less muscle for your efforts, so by introducing not only different exercises, but variations on the exercises you are doing, then you force your body to constantly try to keep up and therefore put on lots of muscle.
