Other fish to keep with Goldfish
February 17th, 2010
Goldfish are coldwater fish, so if you don’t check your goldfish information carefully, you would think that you could keep any other coldwater fish in the same tank. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Many coldwater fish, like koi, are so big that they don’t make good tankmates with goldfish. Large fish can be very aggressive around smaller fish, and will bite and nip at the goldfish’s fins. Smaller fish may get bitten or even eaten by the larger goldfish. It’s not unusual to find one less small fish and one very full goldfish in your tank. Goldfish are happiest in goldfish-only tanks. If you are determined to have non-goldfish in your tank, white cloud minnows are compatible with goldfish, but being smaller fish, are often eaten. Whatever you do, don’t bring wild coldwater fish home to live with your goldfish. The wild fish can carry parasites, fungi, and bacteria that will harm your goldfish. Always purchase any fish at a fish store you trust.
